How Often Should You Replace Your Bra? A Guide to Better Fit and Support

If you’ve ever wondered “How often should you replace your bra?”, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions we’re asked most during our professional bra fittings.

A bra is designed to give you support, comfort and shape, but it won’t last forever. With regular wear and washing, the elastic gradually loses its stretch, meaning your bra can no longer do its job properly.

As a general guide, we recommend replacing your everyday bras every six months to ensure you’re getting the support your body deserves.

How Long Should a Bra Last?

The lifespan of a bra depends on how often you wear it and how well you care for it, but for most women, an everyday bra should be replaced around every six months.

Rotating between several bras and following the care instructions can help them last longer, but even the highest-quality bras will eventually lose their elasticity.

If your bra no longer feels supportive, it’s probably time for a replacement.

Why Does a New Bra Fit on the Loosest Hook?

When you’re fitted for a new bra, it should always feel comfortable on the loosest hook.

This isn’t because it’s too big—it’s actually the sign of a correctly fitted bra.

Over time, the band naturally stretches with wear. Starting on the loosest hook means you have room to tighten the band as this happens.

A simple guide is:

  • New bra: Wear on the loosest hook.

  • After around two months: Move to the middle hook.

  • After another two months: Use the tightest hook.

  • Around six months: It’s usually time to replace your bra.

If you’ve reached the tightest hook and the band still feels loose, your bra has reached the end of its working life.

Your Body Changes More Than You Think

Even if your favourite bra still looks new, your body may have changed.

Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, hormonal changes or changes in exercise can all affect your bra size and shape.

That’s why we recommend booking a professional bra fitting whenever you notice changes in your body or your bras no longer feel quite right.

A well-fitting bra should feel supportive without digging in, the band should sit level around your body, and the cups should fit smoothly without gaps or overflow.

Signs You Need a New Bra

Wondering if it’s time to replace your bra? Look out for these signs:

  • You’re always wearing it on the tightest hooks.

  • The band rides up your back.

  • The straps keep slipping off your shoulders.

  • The cups wrinkle or no longer fit properly.

  • The underwire is poking through.

  • The fabric or elastic has lost its stretch.

  • Your bra feels uncomfortable or no longer offers enough support.

The Importance of a Professional Bra Fitting

Studies suggest many women are wearing the wrong bra size, often without realising it.

A professional bra fitting takes the guesswork out of finding the right size and style for your body. The right bra can improve comfort, posture and confidence, making a noticeable difference to how your clothes fit and how you feel throughout the day.
